Visitor Experience: Hallwalls is a nationally-renowned multidisciplinary contemporary arts center founded on Buffalo’s West Side 42 years ago, now a tenant in Babeville. The exhibition that will be on display in our gallery is a one-person exhibition of work by Ashley Smith, who is Inspired by Jungian psychology and mythology. She creates personal narratives about womanhood, motherhood, art, stories, and myths of the wild woman archetype. We can also have our cinema/small performance space available for viewing in the basement below our gallery.
Building Description: Babeville is the former Asbury Delaware Methodist Church at the SE corner of Delaware Ave. & Tupper Street. The cornerstone was placed in 1871, and the whole building was completed in 1876. The original design was by noted Buffalo architect John H. Selkirk, build of Medina sandstone and fitted with etched glass windows by the local firm of Booth & Reister. After years of neglect and disrepair in 2002 Ani DiFranco and Scot Fisher took on the restoration of the building with the cooperation and investment of the City of Buffalo then mayor, Anthony Masiello by repairing the huge slate roof and towers, allowing the sidewalk to reopen for the first time in several years. The interior design of Hallwalls was designed by Architectural Resources, architect Kristine Kemmis, while the building exterior and window system to protect the etched glass windows, the stage that replaced the original altar and the expanded height in the Ninth Ward was renovated by Lehigh Construction Group, with head engineer Martin Knauss. Asbury Hall (the main sanctuary now hosts concerts, weddings and a variety of events.
